Numeracy
Numeracy is taught in mathematics lessons and across all learning areas in line with the Australian Curriculum Mathematics and Numeracy Continuum. Numeracy is taught using evidence-based strategies across the school from R-6 as outlined by the Department for Education.
All teachers use a common sequence of learning. This sequence builds on concepts from previous years and revisits concepts that are connected across the year. We place a large focus on developing a solid understanding of number concepts so students have a solid foundation in mathematics learning.
Students are provided with rich learning tasks with opportunities for all learners to be successful and stretched based on their current level of understanding. Teachers use a variety of flexible learning strategies to deepen student understanding. When teaching concepts students learn multiple ways of demonstrating learning.
Student progress is tracked and monitored through Stage Tests and a tracking tool which provides teachers with information about current understanding and where any gaps in learning are for targeted intervention.
We are working with Tierney Kennedy from Back to Front Maths to develop our staff’s skills and knowledge in teaching mathematics effectively.
